Architectural Design
SAS's architecture is driven by the pursuit of quality. It is not just buildings but urban design that affects our well-being. We are concerned with the physical context of a project, sensitive to the culture and climate of their place. The quest for quality embraces the physical performance of buildings.
SAS has always been guided by a belief that the quality of our surroundings has a direct influence on the quality of our lives, whether that is in the workplace, at home or in the public realm. Allied to that is an acknowledgement that architecture is generated by the needs of people - both material and spiritual - and a concern for the physical context and the culture and climate of place. Equally, excellence of design and its successful execution are central to our approach.
We believe the best architecture comes from a fusion of all the elements that separately comprise and inform the character of a building: the structure that holds it up; the services that allow it to function; its ecology; the quality of natural light; the symbolism of the form; the relationship of the building to the skyline or the streetscape; the way you move through or around it; and last but not least its ability to lift the spirits. This holistic approach is augmented by a strong commitment to the clients we serve, and also to the public domain and the many users involved. A high degree of personal service, coupled with respect for the precious resources of cost and time, therefore characterizes our client relationships.
The scale, diversity of our new projects were unimaginable 11 years ago, yet many of the issues that excited us in the early days continue to inform what we do today. We work in the spirit of enquiry, challenging preconceptions and testing conventions. The process of ‘reinvention’ distinguishes all of our work – past and present – and rests on a duty to design well and to design responsibly.
Structural Engineering
SAS has designed the structure for many of many challenging projects. SAS already has gained a reputation for innovation and quality. This global discipline, serving clients in all sectors, is offered in isolation or as part of a multi-disciplinary service.
In addition to generic building structures we have particular expertise in lightweight structures; in seismic engineering; and in the design of towers and masts, along with associated skills such as wind engineering. Our facade group works with leading architects and manufacturers means we are leaders in the structural uses of glass.
Our work is not only limited to new-build projects. We apply a thorough knowledge of the use of building materials and historical construction techniques to undertake building appraisals, restoration and refurbishments. Projects range from the restoration of historical buildings of various institutions through to remedial work of structures still under construction.
Earthquake Engineering
Our expertise in earthquake engineering comes from years of working in earthquake prone areas and having done extensive research on the subject. We have global expertise including those in the USA, Japan, and in other highly seismic areas, we have many engineers who solve problems posed by the need to withstand damaging earthquakes as a matter of routine.
Earthquake engineering is a wide field that encompasses a broad range of specialist skills ranging from geology, seismology, geotechnical and structural engineering to risk analysis. We have built up expertise in all these areas and have applied these skills successfully to an extensive portfolio of projects ranging from traditional building and industrial structures projects.
Through our multidisciplinary approach, we are not only able to provide our clients with high performance structures but also designs that ensure cost and time efficient solutions.
Lightweight Structure
SAS Consultants provide the full range of numerical analysis services necessary for the design, fabrication and installation of architectural stressed membrane structures.
Our clients are typically consulting structural engineers during the initial design phase of a project, and membrane contractors for production of fabrication and installation information. As specialist sub-consultants we are used to integrating effectively with the broader design and construction team who may themselves be based in a variety of world-wide locations.
The particular tasks we undertake are:
Shape Finding
Determination of an appropriate form that satisfies aesthetic, engineering and functional requirements.
Load Analysis
Calculating component stresses and foundation loads under applied wind and snow loading.
Patterning
Production of membrane cutting patterns, cable lengths and steelwork component geometry.
Erection Analysis
Determination of component stresses and movements during the installation process.
All activities are subject to our Quality Management. This also covers the transfer and crosschecking of all contractual and technical information with our clients.
Urban planning / Masterplanning
What are the things which make up a city and what are the influences they have in our society and the way we inhabit these places?
In our contemporary urban world, the driving forces behind urban projects such as local economies, social empowerment, political will and infrastructure requirements will have to address the future for the world’s growing cities and try to find appropriate answers to these questions.
In today's society, a city belongs to everyone in it. In most cases, cities have continuously redefined human interaction, natural ecosystems, and economic cycles. At the beginning of the 21st Century –the urban century - the design challenge needs to encompass the redefinition of the key urban questions.
Addressing climate change, global warming as well as urbanization as the driving force to promote economic development are some of the key issues we address throughout the projects we undertake.
Building Services Engineering
SAS provides full building services engineering integrated with the building design and aesthetics based on local understanding, international knowledge and technical competence.
SAS’s early involvement in the design process helps to maximize the cost-effectiveness and flexibility of the project. Through active consultation with clients and architects, building services are integrated into the building aesthetic and the most adequate and economically viable solution is found.
SAS understands the importance of finding a solution that balances capital and operating costs and works with clients to achieve this equilibrium.
Design solutions support long term sustainability for clients, building systems and end users. With a broad skills base, SAS creates holistic solutions for clients, with a multidisciplinary team.
